How Can Law Firms Be More Sustainable?
17 May, 20231-2 minutesIn recent years, the concept of sustainability has become increasingly important for businesses across all industries, including the legal sector. Law firms in the UK are no exception and have a responsibility to reduce their impact on the environment while remaining profitable.
In this blog post, we will explore:
- What sustainability means
- Sustainability challenges in the legal industry
- Ways law firms can be more sustainable
- Net zero and The Legal Sustainability Alliance
What is sustainability?
Defined by the United Nations Bundtland Commission in 1987 sustainability is “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”
This refers to the ability to maintain natural resources and ecosystems for future generations by minimising the negative impact of human activities on the environment. This involves reducing waste, conserving energy, minimising pollution, and promoting sustainable resource use.
In business, sustainability refers to doing business without negatively impacting the environment, community, or society as a whole.
Sustainability in the legal industry is about recognising the connection of environmental, social, and economic issues, and making a conscious effort to operate in a way that is both responsible and sustainable for the long-term.
Sustainability challenges in the legal industry
One of the most significant sustainability challenges facing the legal industry is its environmental impact. Law firms consume significant amounts of energy for lighting, heating and powering computers as well as water and paper which generates large amounts of waste and carbon emissions.
Many law firms operate in older buildings that are not designed to be environmentally sustainable. As a result, these buildings require a lot of energy for heating and cooling, which leads to a high carbon footprint. Upgrading to more energy-efficient buildings or implementing energy-saving measures can be difficult and expensive for law firms, especially smaller ones that have limited resources.
Transportation is another significant challenge with Lawyers often needing to travel to attend meetings, court appearances, and other work-related activities, which contributes to greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution. This challenge can be Intensified in larger cities with heavy traffic and limited public transportation options.
The limited awareness and understanding of sustainability issues among legal professionals and staff can also be a challenge. Without sufficient knowledge and understanding of environmental sustainability, it can be difficult for firms to develop and implement effective sustainability strategies and initiatives. This can result in missed opportunities to reduce environmental impacts and improve sustainability performance.
Ways law firms can be more sustainable
Law firms can take steps towards sustainability in a variety of ways, both big and small. Here are some suggestions for ways that law firms can be more sustainable:
Going paperless and embracing technology
One of the most effective ways to reduce paper waste is to embrace technology. Electronic document management systems can reduce paper usage, and online meeting tools can reduce the need for travel. Cloud-based computing can also reduce energy consumption by eliminating the need for in-house servers.
Adopt sustainable practices
Simple changes like using energy-efficient lighting, turning off equipment when not in use, encouraging the use of reusable items, such as water bottles and coffee cups and recycling paper can make a significant impact on sustainability.
Also by choosing sustainable materials like recycled paper, biodegradable pens, and refillable ink cartridges will reduce the use of single-use plastics and minimise waste.
Switching to a green energy provider
Green energy providers generate electricity from renewable sources, such as wind, solar, hydro, or geothermal power, instead of fossil fuels. This means that they produce little or no greenhouse gas emissions, which contribute to climate change.
By switching to a green energy provider law firms can support the development of renewable energy and reduce their reliance on fossil fuels which can help to reduce carbon emissions.
Many green energy providers offer competitive pricing, so switching to green energy does not necessarily mean paying more for electricity. Some providers also offer tools and resources to help customers reduce their energy consumption and carbon footprint, such as energy audits, energy-efficient appliances, and tips for reducing energy waste.
Alternative travel
Law firms can also support sustainable commuting by promoting alternative options such as liftshare as well as providing cycle parking, showers, and lockers to encourage employees to cycle or walk to work.
Community involvement
Encourage employees to participate in sustainability initiatives in the community, such as beach cleanups, tree planting, or other environmental projects as well as educate employees on company sustainability initiatives increasing awareness and understanding of sustainability issues.
Net zero and The Legal Sustainability Alliance
Net zero refers to the balance between greenhouse gas emissions produced and removed from the atmosphere. The United Kingdom has set a legally binding target to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 and many businesses, including law firms, are setting their own net zero targets as part of their sustainability strategies.
The Legal Sustainability Alliance (LSA) is a network of law firms and organisations committed to promoting environmental sustainability across the legal sector. Established in 2007, the LSA has over 320 members, including many of the UK's largest law firms.
Members are committed to reducing their environmental impact through a range of sustainability initiatives, including reducing energy consumption, promoting sustainable travel, reducing waste, and increasing awareness of sustainability issues among legal professionals and staff.
The LSA provides a platform for members to share best practices and collaborate on sustainability initiatives, while also promoting sustainability in the wider legal sector through engagement with policymakers and regulators, and participation in industry events and conferences.
