How to Find an Accounting Job

1-2 minutes

The demand for accountancy professionals is on the rise which is good news if you’re looking to land your first accountant job! However, with an increase in demand comes an increase in competition.

We understand that it can be difficult to know where to start when you’re looking for accountant jobs which is why we’re here to help. In our latest blog, we delve into how to find an accounting job - including the best places to search for one!

Identify your career objectives

Before commencing a job search, your first priority should be to identify what you need - and want - from your next job.

When we’re talking to candidates, it’s always our first port of call – we find out what you want, need and aspire towards when looking for a job. You should interrogate yourself in the same way. If you know exactly what you’re looking for, it will make your search much more efficient and beneficial.

Ask yourself the following questions, the answers will help you eliminate any accounting jobs that don’t match your personal criteria.

  • How much do I need to earn and what salary do I aspire to?
  • Which area of accounting do I want to work in?
  • What career progression do I want, or need?
  • What kind of work/life balance is right for me?

What accounting jobs are available?

There’s a very broad range of accounting jobs, each with different strengths and weaknesses, each with different required qualifications and skill sets. There are four main areas of accounting that you can work in:

  • Taxation
  • Financial accounting and reporting
  • Applied finance
  • Management accounting

Accountants are needed in nearly every kind of business, so the range of different industries you could work in is vast. Different specialisms and levels of accounting jobs require different levels of study and qualification such as an ACCA or CGMA qualification. This also presents a range of salaries available. Chartered Accountants, for example, will demand a higher salary than Accountants owing to the greater responsibility and more extensive training they have.

Where can I find an accounting job?

  • Job boards
  • Recruitment agencies

 LinkedIn

With thousands of accounting jobs live at any one time, LinkedIn is a fantastic platform to find accounting jobs. LinkedIn is the world’s largest professional network, so it’s an important place to build your online presence and network. .

Just in the same way you’d prepare yourself for the job search, you need to prepare your LinkedIn profile too. Developing a professional and up-to-date LinkedIn profile that showcases your skills and experience makes all the difference – it’s essentially an online CV that can be viewed by any potential employers, so it’s crucially important that you keep your LinkedIn account working hard for you.

Along with showcasing your professional credentials and experience, LinkedIn is a great way to grow your network. Connecting with the right people will expose you to the kind of areas you want to work in, getting your name and identity out there for potential employers.

Job boards

Job boards are what they say on the tin - a place where jobs are all posted in one place. Job boards come in all shapes and sizes, from larger generic job boards such as Indeed, to smaller accounting specific job boards such as Top Financial Jobs

On most job boards, you can set your own search parameters and criteria to make sure you’re only being shown jobs which are relevant to you. Job boards often let users search for jobs based on their location, salary preference, working pattern or contract type.

When applying for jobs, your CV or application will be sent directly to the employer who has posted the job on the job board.

Some job boards will enable you to upload your CV for employers and recruitment agencies to contact you directly about relevant positions.
