Labour Group Assistant **

A Local Authority in the Morden area are actively seeking a Labour Group Assistant.

Permanent Position | Location: Morden, SM4 | Salary: £42,840k per annum | Must be able to attend the office 3-5 days a week)

Role Context:

  • To provide support to the Labour Group enabling its effective contribution to the work of the administration and Council, providing policy, communications and administrative support, and acting as a link between the Leader of the Council, Cabinet and wider Group.

Role Overview:

  • Support Group meetings by collaborating with the Leader and Cabinet members on reports, preparing for discussions, producing briefings, and coordinating with the Group Chair and Secretary on agendas, paper distribution, and meeting arrangements.
  • Assist Group preparations for Council meetings, including drafting motions, amendments, and questions, coordinating speakers, providing research and briefings, and liaising with the Chief Whip on attendance.
  • Build strong relationships with the Council's Corporate Management Team and officers to stay updated on policy developments, ensuring effective support for the Leader and Cabinet members and enabling Group contributions to administration efforts, in coordination with Cabinet Support Officers.

Knowledge:

  • In-depth understanding of local government, its structures, governance arrangements and decision-making processes.
  • Understanding of the relationship between the political administration and the Council's officer team.
  • Excellent understanding of the current and emerging national policy agenda facing local government.
  • Excellent understanding of national current affairs and the political agenda.

Experience:

  • Experience operating in similar roles or public affairs roles which have involved lobbying or promoting aims, profile of the organisation.
  • Experience working independently with little supervision, managing competing priorities to demanding deadlines.
