Women in Accountancy and Finance Call for a Culture Focused on Development and Career Growth

1-2 minutes

Traditionally a male dominated field, the accounting and finance sector is experiencing a steady increase in the number of female professionals in the workforce. According to the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), women account for approximately 46% of all Accountants and Auditors in the UK, however career and development expectations vary between men and women in the sector.

We recently conducted our own research looking at the career perks and preferences of male and female professionals across accountancy practices, local authorities and the private sector.

Our report revealed that 30% of women surveyed consider professional development to be the most important perk in 2025, compared to only 11% of men. According to the report, 32% of male respondents value flexibility and 27% value a competitive salary. Women however seek professional development, and 26% of female respondents value flexibility.

A significant finding from our research was that women would consider changing jobs in 2025 for better career advancement opportunities. 30.5% of women said career progression was their leading reason for looking for a new job in 2025.

With the growing number of women in the industry, employers must prioritise employee satisfaction by fostering a company culture that supports professional development and career growth.

As well as providing opportunities for growth and skill development, women value a company that emphasises inclusivity and strong leadership, and sets a good example. The report highlighted women's preference for a work culture that provides opportunities to upskill and advance through Continued Professional Development.

One female professional said culture was about, ‘Empowering women and having recognition programmes and a good support system.’

Finance recruitment specialist, Shannon McGarry said, “The role of women in accountancy and finance is ever evolving, and more and more women are looking for opportunities to grow professionally.”

Shannon continued, “In the past, women might have sacrificed their career to raise a family, but now the landscape has completely changed. With the right support in place, women can have it all - grow professionally, pursue senior positions and maintain a healthy work-life balance.”
