Spencer Clarke Group Raises £3,403 for Headway!
21 Oct, 20241-2 minutesWe’re proud to announce that we have raised £3,403 for brain injury charity Headway by taking on the ultimate obstacle course Tough Mudder!
On Saturday 19th October, we took on the Tough Mudder course in a bid to raise money for Headway, a charity which aims to improve life after brain injury by providing vital support and information services.
29 members of staff took part, running, walking and crawling through 12 muddy obstacles in the intense 8km obstacle course. Our team didn't let the mud at Cholmondeley Castle in Cheshire dampen their spirits as they tackled obstacle after obstacle including Hero Walls, The Block Ness Monster, Mudderhorn and Cage Crawl.
After setting up a JustGiving page, our target was to raise £3,000 for Headway; we’re proud to announce that we smashed our target and raised £3,403 (to date).
This isn’t the first time that we have taken on Tough Mudder. Back in 2022 we also raised £2,889 for Lancashire Mind.
Headway supports users in the Blackburn, Darwen, Hyndburn and Ribble Valley area and the money raised will go towards helping people with brain injuries by providing them with the opportunity to share their experiences with others.
To decide which cause to fundraise for, employees at Spencer Clarke Group put forward charities that were close to their hearts.
Senior Consultant, Jenna McFarlane, who nominated Headway said, “Headway has had a significant impact on mine and my family's lives after my dad was diagnosed with Encephalitis 10 years ago. This is a vicious virus which attacked his brain and resulted in him having no short term memory.”
Jenna continued, “Headway’s support group helped him gain back his confidence by speaking with like minded people. It got him back out the house doing regular activities which has made him more aware and confident to speak about his brain injury.”
According to Action for Brain Injury Week and Headway, every 90 seconds, someone in the UK is admitted to hospital with a brain injury. Brain injury can affect anyone at any time and can alter every aspect of a person’s life – including their ability to walk, talk, and feel.
The losses and challenges can be severe and permanent and it can also have a devastating effect on loved ones. That is what makes charities like Headway so important as they provide support to families and friends through brain rehabilitation programmes, community outreach and respite care depending on needs. The money raised will also be used to fund transport to and from meetings, social activities and much more.
Jenna added, “Many are in wheelchairs and unable to do regular outings so the support from the charity helps them to still live an amazing life!”
Jenna’s mother is now the chairperson of the Blackburn with Darwen branch and supports the service users with regular outings and activities from the donations raised.
Managing Director, Mike Shorrock added, “At Spencer Clarke Group we are passionate about supporting local charities and driving meaningful change. Taking on Tough Mudder has given us the opportunity to raise awareness for Headway which will hopefully make a positive difference.”
