We are currently working with a client based in Ellesmere Port who is seeking an experienced Benefit Assessor to join their Revenues and Benefits team.

This is an excellent opportunity for a knowledgeable benefits professional to support the assessment and administration of Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit claims, ensuring customers receive accurate entitlement decisions and outstanding levels of service.

As a Benefit Assessor, you will be responsible for assessing a wide range of Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit claims in line with current legislation, case law, and organisational procedures. You will manage your own caseload, maintain accurate customer records, provide advice to claimants, and work closely with internal teams and external agencies to ensure efficient claim processing and excellent customer outcomes.

The successful candidate will be customer-focused, highly organised, and capable of interpreting complex regulations while maintaining high levels of accuracy and performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess and process Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit applications, including complex cases involving students, self-employed applicants, and various tenancy arrangements.
  • Verify information and maintain accurate customer records in line with Data Protection, Freedom of Information, and information security requirements.
  • Provide clear and accurate advice to customers regarding benefit entitlement, welfare benefits, and available financial support.
  • Calculate, classify, notify, and recover benefit overpayments in accordance with relevant legislation and procedures.
  • Liaise with customers, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), Housing Associations, landlords, and other stakeholders to resolve benefit-related queries.
  • Identify potential fraudulent claims and make appropriate referrals while supporting quality assurance and continuous service improvement activities.

Candidate Requirements

  • Previous experience assessing Housing Benefit, Council Tax Benefit, or similar welfare benefit claims.
  • Strong working knowledge of benefits legislation, regulations, and assessment procedures.
  • Experience calculating entitlement, verifying claims, and managing overpayment recovery processes.
  • Excellent attention to detail with the ability to maintain accuracy when handling complex caseloads.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills, both over the telephone and face-to-face.
  • Proficiency using computerised benefits or case management systems and the ability to work effectively within performance targets.


Contract Length: 3-6 months with a view to extend to an ongoing contract.
Pay Rate: £18.00 PAYE
Working pattern - 37 hours per week, onsite.
